North and east of the small town of Bongard in the Eifel are the two areas that make up this FFH area of the same name.
The nature reserve around the Celtic ring walls on the now heavily eroded tertiary volcano Barsberg with its structure-rich and old-growth beech forests and hay meadows is also located in this FFH area.

Great wealth of structure and old wood
In addition to woodruff and woodruff beech forests, the rock pile forests on the rubble heaps and weathered basalt columns of the volcano are remarkable. The area is particularly important because of its wealth of structures and old wood, which offers shelter to animals specially adapted to these habitats. These include, for example, the stock dove or the black woodpecker. Some of the oak and beech trees are over 150 years old.
