Mighty peat moss communities and swampy moors have conquered the landscape in this protected area on the outer edge of the Vulkaneifel Nature and UNESCO Geopark.

This area protects remnants of peat raised bogs and transitional bogs in a mosaic with bog and swamp forests and their communities. Peat moss communities continue to grow here to this day - even though the peat cutting and the associated drainage measures have significantly interfered with the original landscape.

Not much is known today about the use of peat in the moors near Weißenseifen. Peat was cut here between 1890 and 1920 and the growth was probably used as bedding in cattle stables. Since then, many areas have remained forest-free, some of which now have thick peat moss communities and swamps.
