The Kyll divides the FFH area of Kyllberg and Steinborner Forrest into two halves, only the northern tip of the eastern part is in the Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark.

We are located here in the Salmwald nature park core zone. The forest area is crossed by tributaries and tributaries of the Kyll. The soil conditions determine the character of the forest - on alkaline soils, i.e. over rocks such as lime or basalt, woodruff beech forests have developed with a very species-rich herb layer.

On brown soils over base-poor or acid-weathering rocks (Bundsandstein, Grauwacken and sandstone from the slate mountains), grove-beech forests develop with a species-poor herbaceous layer dominated by grove-ledges.

Habitat of the Bechstein's bat

There are also moorland and ravine forests as well as small transitional moors. These diverse forest features offer the Bechstein's bat good living conditions. The species is mainly distributed in Central Europe and especially in Germany, which is why Germany is largely responsible for the Bechstein's bat.
