Manderscheid Castles
Only the narrow valley of the Lieser separates the two Manderscheid castles from each other, creating a unique interplay of nature and culture. Today the upper and lower castles lie peacefully in the landscape. But this was not always the case, because the domains of the Manderscheid Counts and the Elector of Trier met here.
Historically, the upper castle is mentioned around 1140. It was owned by the Elector of Trier until it was destroyed in 1673 and was surrounded by Luxembourgish territory for a while. The Niederburg was first mentioned in documents around 1170. It was the ancestral home of the Manderscheid counts, who ruled here as bailiffs of Echternach Abbey on Luxembourg territory. In 1794 the already abandoned and dilapidated castle was destroyed.
Both castle ruins are accessible - the world of the Middle Ages comes to life there! The historic castle festival attracts thousands of visitors to Manderscheid in summer, where the fight of the lion knights, jugglers and medieval crafts can be experienced live. The Manderscheid Castle Christmas, which takes place in Advent and creates a great atmosphere, especially when there is snow, is particularly magical. This doesn't just make children's hearts beat faster!
New: Barrier-Free Access and a Digital Experience
With the barrier-free and digital development of the Niederburg, an innovative flagship project has been created for the entire region. Thanks to extensive redesign efforts, the castle courtyard is now more accessible to people with physical disabilities. This includes level access, modern sanitary facilities including a barrier-free restroom, a multifunctional room, and a barrier-free tourist information center with seating areas. A new stage was also built – it is used during events such as the Castle Festival or the Castle Christmas.
A special highlight is the newly created "Digital Castle World": With the help of digital media, visitors gain fascinating insights into medieval life at the Niederburg. Augmented reality applications, 360° videos, and a true-to-scale tactile model enable an inclusive, multimedia experience of the castle's history. A dedicated app offers virtual tours of the castle, complemented by audiovisual information provided at various stations around the site.
The projects were funded by the Corona special fund (1.3 million euros) and the EU development program EULLE (148,210 euros).
